Instructions/Setup:

This finishing practice allows players to develop their finishing ability from close range, specifically in and around the 6-yard box. Play starts with a 3-player combination before one forward attacks the space behind the mannequins in an attempt to get on the end of a cross.

Once each phase is complete, the 3 players will rotate, ensuring all 3 players get high reps of crossing, setting, and finishing.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Reactions – Focus on the importance of reacting quickly to the cross and attacking the space in the 6-yard box. Players should be encouraged to time their runs to arrive at the perfect moment for a clean finish.

• Finishing Techniques – Emphasize different finishing techniques based on the type of cross, such as volleys, headers, or side-foot finishes. Players should aim to place the ball with precision rather than just power.

• Crossing Quality – Ensure that the player crossing the ball is focusing on delivery. The cross should be made with accuracy and pace, providing the attacker with the best opportunity to finish.

• Positioning in the Box – Teach the attackers to always position themselves well in the 6-yard box, adjusting their runs depending on where the cross is coming from. Understanding where to be at the right time is crucial for finishing in tight spaces.

Progression 1: Add Defenders

Introduce a passive defender or two to apply light pressure on the attacking player. The attacker must still focus on timing their run and finishing under pressure.

Focus: Developing the ability to finish when there’s light defensive pressure in tight spaces.

Progression 2: Increase Cross Variety

Vary the type of cross being delivered. Include low crosses, high balls, and floated deliveries to test the attacker’s ability to finish from different types of service.

Focus: Adapting finishing techniques to different types of crosses and improving versatility in finishing from close range.
