Instructions/Setup:
This is a fun starter activity that allows players to work on dribbling and passing, both unopposed and in opposed 2v1 combinations. The central player, who plays a pass into one of the outer grids, will momentarily act as a defender in a 2v1 situation. The attacking 2 players attempt to combine and break out of the grid, transitioning back into the unopposed central zone.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing & Dribbling Combinations – Focus on quick, accurate passing and good movement off the ball. Encourage the attacking duo to work together, using short, sharp passes to break down the defender in the 2v1.
• Decision Making in 2v1 – The player with the ball in the 2v1 situation should read the defender's position and decide whether to dribble, pass, or shoot based on the defender's actions. Encourage creativity and quick thinking.
• Transition Speed – Once the attacking duo breaks out of the grid, they should transition back quickly into the central zone. Stress the importance of maintaining the pace of the game to keep the flow and intensity high.
• Defensive Awareness – The central defender should be aware of their positioning in the 2v1 situation. Encourage them to close down space quickly but also read the attackers' intentions to avoid being easily bypassed.
Progression 1: Additional Defenders
Introduce an additional defender into the outer grid to create a more challenging 2v2 scenario. This progression will help players develop their ability to work in slightly more pressured conditions while maintaining control and composure.
Focus: Improving decision-making and passing under pressure in 2v1 situations.
Progression 2: Timed Transition
Make the transitions from the outer grid to the central zone time-based, adding a sense of urgency. Players will now need to complete the 2v1 and transition back into the central zone within a set time, encouraging faster decision-making and movement.
Focus: Enhancing speed of play and quick transitions in small-sided scenarios.
