Instructions/Setup:

This rondo breaks a 4231 formation down into specific zones, where the possession team will play 4v2. The #10 is required to slide vertically to work in both the top and bottom zones, while the #9 is required to slide horizontally to create the 4v2 in the top zones. The practice transitions into a 6v3 centrally if the pressing team manages to regain possession.

Coaching Notes:

• Movement of #10 – The #10 should focus on sliding vertically between the top and bottom zones. Their movement should create space for passing and help connect the midfield with the attack. Encourage them to always look for opportunities to link up play and be available for a quick ball into feet.

• Movement of #9 – The #9 must slide horizontally to work across the top zones. This movement is key to creating a 4v2 overload and providing a target for quick passes. Their positioning should stretch the defensive shape, creating space for teammates to play through.

• Defending Team's Pressing – The defending team should work together to close down the passing lanes and force the possession team into mistakes. The key to success in pressing is maintaining good communication and awareness of the space in the grid.

• Transition to 6v3 – When the defending team wins possession, the practice transitions into a 6v3 overload centrally. The pressing team should look to exploit the central space and move the ball quickly to capitalize on the numerical advantage.

Progression 1: Reduced Grid Size

Reduce the grid size to increase the intensity of the rondo. This will force quicker decision-making and improve players' ability to play under pressure. The defenders will have less time to press, and the attacking team must be sharp in their passing.

Focus: Improving speed of play, awareness, and decision-making under pressure.

Progression 2: Additional Attacking Players

Add a neutral player or two on the outside to help the possession team progress the ball more effectively. These neutrals should be able to receive passes and help break down the pressing team by providing additional options.

Focus: Enhancing positional play, passing angles, and creating overloads through neutral players.
