Instructions/Setup:

This practice allows a centre forward to play through 4 finishes while also improving their conditioning. The forward must attack from end to end, with 4 wide servers crossing 1 ball into the box each time. A coach will call out which player is to cross as the forward is arriving in order to add a layer of difficulty to the practice.

Coaching Notes:

• Timing the Run – The centre forward should time their runs well, attacking the box at the right moment to meet the cross. The key is to anticipate the delivery and adjust the run accordingly to ensure they are in the correct position for the finish.

• Finishing Techniques – The forward should focus on a variety of finishes, including volleys, headers, and one-touch finishes, depending on the type of cross. Encouraging the forward to use both feet and their head will improve their overall finishing skills in various situations.

• Conditioning Focus – As the forward transitions from one end to the other, maintaining high intensity is crucial. They should push themselves to keep the pace up while maintaining proper technique. Conditioning is an integral part of this practice, so the forward should work to recover quickly and prepare for the next finish.

• Focus on Accuracy – While finishing under pressure, accuracy should take precedence over power. The forward should aim to place the ball in the corners of the goal, either side of the goalkeeper, ensuring a higher chance of scoring.

Progression 1: Increasing the Distance

To further challenge the forward’s conditioning and finishing ability, increase the distance the forward must travel between each finish. This will require them to work harder to get into position and execute the finish while maintaining speed and focus.

Focus: Improving stamina and focus during high-intensity actions.

Progression 2: Randomized Crosses

Introduce more unpredictability by randomizing which player will cross the ball. This forces the forward to adjust their positioning on the move, ensuring they stay alert and react quickly to different types of deliveries.

Focus: Adapting to varying cross types and maintaining focus in chaotic situations.
