Instructions/Setup:
This rondo breaks a 3-2-5 formation down into 3 specific zones where the possession team will play either 5v2 or 4v2. Players can play through the zones freely, and 4 of the players (the central players) are tasked with playing in 2 different zones. The practice transitions into a 6v4 centrally if the pressing team manages to regain possession.
Coaching Notes:
• Zone Awareness – Players must be aware of their positioning in relation to the zones and focus on playing the ball quickly through the areas. Encourage players to be aware of which zone they are operating in and use the space effectively.
• Central Player Movement – The central players must be constantly moving between the two zones to create passing options. They should focus on offering support and being available for quick passes, while also maintaining strong communication to organize play.
• Quick Passing & Combinations – Emphasize quick, sharp passing and combinations to break through the defensive shape. Encourage the possession team to move the ball with purpose and avoid being static in their positioning.
• Defensive Pressure – The pressing team should focus on staying compact, applying pressure to the ball carrier, and working together to close down passing lanes. Communication and coordinated pressing will be crucial in preventing the possession team from progressing through the zones.
Progression 1: Add Restriction on Passing
Limit the number of touches each player can take in the rondo (e.g., 1 or 2 touches per player). This forces players to focus on quick decision-making and movement off the ball.
Focus: Improving the speed of play and decision-making in tight spaces.
Progression 2: Add More Defenders
Increase the number of defenders (e.g., add an additional defender in each zone), making it harder for the possession team to break through the defensive shape. The possession team must work harder to create passing lanes and maintain possession.
Focus: Developing the ability to break down a more compact and organized defense.
