Instructions/Setup:

This unopposed build-up practice allows players to develop their ability to play line-breaking passes and switch play. Both forward passes in this practice are angled, completing a switch of play and encouraging the central player to receive at angles that facilitate this switch.

Coaching Notes:

• Angle of Passes – Players should focus on playing the forward passes at sharp angles to break defensive lines. The receiving player must be positioned to facilitate an easy switch of play and must read the angle of the pass carefully.

• Receiving at Angles – The central player receiving the ball should always aim to receive with an open body position, ready to play the switch pass quickly. This creates momentum and allows for a smoother transition to the opposite side.

• Timing of the Pass – The timing of the line-breaking passes is crucial. The ball should be played when the receiving player is in the correct position to receive, preventing the pass from being intercepted or forced backward.

• Speed of Play – Encourage quick play to transition the ball through the lines. Players should focus on executing quick, clean passes to maintain tempo and catch the defending team off guard.

Progression 1: Add Opponents

Introduce one or two passive defenders who will try to intercept or pressure the receiving players. This forces the attacking team to make quicker decisions and adapt to a more competitive scenario.

Focus: Improving the ability to play under pressure while maintaining accuracy in line-breaking passes.

Progression 2: Increase the Distance

Increase the distance between the central player and the wide players to create more space for the pass. This allows players to focus more on accurate and long-range passes to switch play effectively.

Focus: Enhancing the ability to execute longer, more precise line-breaking and switching passes.
