Half Pitch

Instructions/Setup:

This unopposed passing drill allows players to develop their ability to cross the ball after making positive forward runs in wider areas. The crossers should work on a mixture of low, driven, or floated crosses throughout the practice. As a progression, place several mini goals as targets instead of one big goal, which adds an element of decision-making to the practice and replicates multiple runners into the box.

Coaching Notes:

• Run Timing – The wide players must focus on making positive, forward runs into space. The timing of these runs should allow them to meet the ball in stride, ensuring they can either take a touch or cross with minimal delay.

• Crossing Techniques – Encourage the crossers to vary their crosses. Low, driven crosses should be used for players making near-post runs, while floated crosses are ideal for players arriving at the far post or for crosses to the back of the box.

• Decision-Making – Players should make quick decisions on the type of cross based on the position of the attacking players. Knowing when to deliver a driven ball versus when to float a cross will increase the effectiveness of their crossing.

• Target Focus – With the mini goals placed as targets, the crossers should focus on targeting the space between them rather than aiming for a single large goal. This requires improved accuracy and judgment in delivering crosses based on the movement of the runners.

Progression 1: Mini Goals as Targets

Instead of one big goal, use several mini goals as targets. This forces players to make better decisions about where to place their crosses, adding complexity to the practice as they aim for specific areas.

Focus: Developing accuracy in crossing and improving decision-making under realistic game conditions.

Progression 2: Multiple Runners into the Box

Add multiple runners into the box, replicating a game scenario with several attacking players arriving at different times. The crossers must now assess the best delivery for each type of run, increasing the pressure and decision-making challenge.

Focus: Improving the timing and placement of crosses based on the movements of multiple runners into the box.
