Instructions/Setup:
This 2v1 build-up drill focuses on central progression and switching play under pressure. The practice begins with the goalkeeper playing into a centre back, initiating a 2v1 scenario versus a single presser. The objective for the defenders is to combine centrally and play into one of two mini goals positioned either deeper or higher up the pitch, simulating vertical progression or quick central switches. If the presser wins the ball cleanly, they can immediately counter toward a main goal with a time-limited opportunity.
Coaching Notes:
• Support Angles – The supporting defender must offer clear angles for progression, either to break pressure directly or to switch play into the opposite mini goal.
• Movement to Receive – Encourage the initial receiver to take positive touches and move the ball with purpose, forcing the presser to commit before releasing the pass.
• Timing of Release – The pass into the mini goals should be well-timed and accurate, capitalizing on the moment the presser is bypassed.
• Defensive Pressure – The presser must press with intensity and intelligence, attempting to intercept without fouling, while being ready to transition quickly if possession is won.
Progression 1: Add a Second Presser
Introduce a second pressing player who enters after the first pass is made to increase pressure on the build-up.
Focus: Improves decision-making speed and ball security under more realistic central pressing conditions.
Progression 2: Limit Pass Count Before Scoring
Restrict the defenders to a maximum of three passes before they must play into a mini goal.
Focus: Encourages quick ball circulation and precise execution under time and space constraints.
