Instructions/Setup:

This practice starts with a pass into a centre forward who is under pressure from a defender behind. As soon as the pass is played, all players become live and engage in a 2v2 situation until the ball is dead. Teams can alternate roles after every repetition or complete a set number of reps before switching. Players should rotate through both attacking and defending roles, ensuring they experience starting positions both with their back to goal and facing forward.

Coaching Notes:

• Back-to-Goal Play – When the centre forward receives the ball under pressure, they must focus on holding possession, using their body to shield the ball and creating space for a quick pass or turn.

• Forward-Facing Play – Players in the attacking phase should aim to break free of their defender quickly, using smart movement and timing to receive the ball in a forward-facing position to exploit attacking opportunities.

• Defensive Awareness – Defenders should pressure the attacker efficiently, focusing on positioning themselves to block passes or anticipate turns, ensuring they are tight but not over-committed.

• Transition and Switching Roles – Encourage quick transitions between attacking and defending roles. Players should react swiftly, either by closing down the ball after losing possession or making the most of counter-attacks when regaining the ball.

Progression 1: Limit Touches for Attackers

Restrict the attackers to a set number of touches (e.g., two or three).

Focus: Encourages quicker decision-making and increases the intensity of the 2v2 situations, simulating match conditions.

Progression 2: Add a Support Player

Introduce a neutral player or additional attacker to support the 2v2 scenario.

Focus: Adds complexity to the attacking phase, challenging defenders to deal with more threats and allowing the attackers to combine in a more dynamic manner.
