Instructions/Setup:
This unopposed passing drill focuses on developing players’ ability to cross the ball after making positive forward runs in wider areas. The practice involves three phases:
The first phase sees players making a run into the wide areas to receive a pass and cross the ball (low, driven, or floated).
The second phase involves the same crossers but from a different angle or a deeper position.
The third phase requires the crossers to repeat the process under stress or fatigue, encouraging them to maintain high-quality crosses in a dynamic situation. Players should complete all three phases in one repetition to simulate real match conditions.
Coaching Notes:
• Run Timing and Movement – Players must focus on making positive, timed runs into the wide areas. These runs should be made with enough speed and intent to meet the ball in stride, enabling an effective cross.
• Crossing Techniques – Encourage variety in crossing techniques. Low, driven crosses should be used for players arriving at the near post, while floated crosses are ideal for players attacking the far post or for crosses into the back of the box.
• Decision-Making – Players should make quick decisions on the type of cross to play, depending on the movement and positioning of the attacking players in the box. Knowing when to use a driven or floated ball can make a huge difference.
• Fatigue Management – Since the drill progresses through three phases, remind players to maintain focus and energy management throughout. Quality crosses should remain the priority, even as fatigue sets in.
Progression 1: Mini Goals as Targets
Place several mini goals as targets instead of one big goal. This adds a layer of decision-making for the crossers, who must target specific areas rather than aiming for a single large goal.
Focus: Develops accuracy and decision-making while adding variety to the crossing technique based on the runners’ positions.
Progression 2: Multiple Runners into the Box
Introduce multiple runners into the box, forcing the crossers to read the situation and adapt their crosses accordingly.
Focus: Increases the challenge for crossers by replicating game scenarios where multiple attacking players are competing for the ball in the box.
