Instructions/Setup:
This practice focuses on developing players’ ability to build up centrally using a single pivot player. Play always starts from the goalkeeper, and the attacking team must attempt to build play towards one of the two mini goals. The scoring system awards 1 point for a pass into a mini goal and 2 points if the pass into the mini goal comes from a combination involving the central end line player (acting as the pivot). If the defending team wins possession, they immediately counter-attack towards the main goal. Every goal scored in the main goal is worth 2 points.
Coaching Notes:
• Use of Pivot Player – The pivot player must be positioned centrally to link up play, receiving the ball and distributing it either back to the defenders or forward to progress the attack. Emphasize their role in maintaining possession and recycling the ball when necessary.
• Building through the Midfield – Encourage players to play quick, accurate passes to break through the central midfield areas. The team in possession should aim to use the pivot player as the fulcrum for central progression.
• Combination Play – Focus on quick combinations between players, especially around the central areas and the pivot player. Quick 1-2s or give-and-goes should be used to break through pressure and advance the ball.
• Defensive Pressure & Transitions – When defending, players must quickly close down the pivot player and prevent easy distribution into the mini goals. On regaining possession, transition quickly to counter-attack into the main goal, capitalizing on the moment of overload.
Progression 1: Introduce Defensive Support
Add one additional defender to increase pressure on the build-up team and force more intricate play.
Focus: Forces the build-up team to be more precise and creative when using the pivot player, enhancing their ability to play under pressure.
Progression 2: Limit Time for Scoring
Introduce a time limit within which the attacking team must score into the mini goals or counter-attack to the main goal.
Focus: Increases the intensity and encourages faster decision-making and quicker ball circulation to avoid stalling play.
