1/3 Pitch

Instructions/Setup:

This practice allows players to attack in multiple different scenarios: 1v0, 1v1, and 2v1. The drill runs through four phases, starting with a 1v0 where the attacker works alone to finish. The attacker then transitions to defend in a 1v1 against an incoming attacker. Following that, the scenario progresses to a 2v1, where the attacker has an advantage and finally transitions into a second 2v1 with a different attacking setup. This high-intensity drill enables players to experience a variety of attacking combinations from multiple areas of the pitch.

Coaching Notes:

• Finishing in 1v0 – The initial phase allows the player to work on finishing without pressure. Encourage attackers to focus on composure, taking a touch if necessary, and finishing either low and hard or with precision depending on their distance from goal.

• Defending in 1v1 – When the player transitions to defending, they should focus on positioning and timing their challenge. They should be patient, preventing the attacker from turning and forcing them into wide or less dangerous areas.

• Exploiting the 2v1 Overload – In the 2v1 phase, the attacker should look to combine quickly with their teammate, using their numerical advantage to break down the defender. Quick passing and movement off the ball will be key to making the most of the overload.

• Adaptability in Different Scenarios – Players need to adjust to each phase quickly, from being the attacker in the 1v0 phase to defending in the 1v1 and then transitioning into a 2v1 attack. The ability to switch mindsets and roles under pressure is key for this practice.

Progression 1: Add a Defender to 1v0

In the first phase, after a set number of repetitions, introduce a defender who starts at a distance, making it a 1v1 instead of 1v0. This forces the attacker to be more decisive with their shot and adds realism to the finishing phase.

Focus: Encourages players to deal with pressure while finishing and improves their ability to make quick decisions.

Progression 2: Time the Phases

Introduce a time limit for each phase, requiring players to complete each stage within a set time frame. This increases the intensity of the drill and forces players to think and act quickly.

Focus: Simulates high-pressure game situations where decisions and execution must be fast and efficient.
