Instructions/Setup:

This practice starts with two 1v1 situations and transitions into a 2v2. Two players will dribble around a pole directly ahead of them before playing a pass back into a teammate who will then attack 1v1. The initial ball carrier must transition to defend immediately after their pass into a teammate. Once both 1v1’s are complete, the coach will serve a second ball into the practice, and a 2v2 situation will unfold. This drill emphasizes both attacking and defending transitions, as well as teamwork in the 2v2 phase.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Transition from Attacker to Defender – After completing the 1v1 attack, players should focus on quickly transitioning into a defensive role. They need to be alert and ready to press or contain the opposing attacker, maintaining defensive shape.

• 1v1 Attack Focus – Players should work on using quick feet, dribbling moves, and changes of direction to beat their defender in the 1v1 phase. The key is to be decisive and take on the defender with confidence while looking for an opportunity to take a shot on goal.

• Support in 2v2 – In the 2v2 phase, players should focus on creating space for each other. The attacking duo should communicate to combine and break down the defense, using quick passes and off-the-ball movement to create goal-scoring chances.

• Defensive Awareness in 2v2 – In the 2v2 phase, defenders should work together to cover each other’s positions. Communication is critical to ensure they don’t leave gaps, and they should look to press the attackers while maintaining balance to avoid being easily bypassed.

Progression 1: Add a Third Attacker

Introduce a third attacker on one side of the 2v2 phase to create a momentary overload for the attacking team. This adds complexity and challenges defenders to adapt to numerical superiority in the attack.

Focus: Encourages attackers to use their numbers effectively and defenders to adapt to overload situations.

Progression 2: Time the 2v2 Phase

Set a time limit for the 2v2 phase, encouraging players to make quick decisions and play with urgency. This will increase the intensity and focus players on executing the right decisions under pressure.

Focus: Simulates game-like conditions where players must act quickly, especially in transition moments.
