1/3 Pitch

Instructions/Setup:

Play starts with a 2v2 centrally and 2 neutral players positioned on the outside. The attacking team must combine with the help of the neutral players to progress the ball into the area. Once the attacking players arrive in the area, the practice becomes unopposed, allowing the attackers to freely finish on goal. If the defending players win possession, they should attempt to score into either of the 2 mini goals located outside the grid, and they can also use the neutral players to help with progression. The neutral players are limited to one touch only.

Coaching Notes:

• Utilizing Neutral Players – The attacking team should focus on quick, efficient combinations with the neutral players to progress the ball quickly into the final third. The use of neutral players should aim to stretch the defense and create passing lanes.

• Movement in the Final Third – Once inside the area, attackers should focus on dynamic and fluid movement to create space for themselves and their teammates. Good off-the-ball movement will open up better shooting angles or passing opportunities.

• Defensive Transition – When defending, players must quickly shift focus from defending the initial 2v2 to the potential counterattack. They should aim to block passing lanes and force the attackers into difficult angles.

• Composure in Finishing – In the unopposed finishing phase, attackers should maintain composure and work on a variety of finishes. Depending on the position and angle, they should look to finish first time, use a touch to control, or place the ball into the corners.

Progression 1: Add Time Limit for Finishing

Introduce a time limit for the unopposed finishing phase. The attackers must complete their shot within a set amount of time after arriving in the area.

Focus: Encourages quick decision-making and maintaining composure under pressure.

Progression 2: Limit the Number of Passes

Limit the number of passes the attacking team can make before entering the final third. This forces the team to work more efficiently with the neutral players and push the ball forward quickly.

Focus: Increases tempo and sharpens the attacking team’s ability to transition quickly from build-up to finishing.
