Instructions/Setup:

Play starts with a central rondo, where the build-up team is looking to make 5 consecutive passes before playing into either of the 2 mini goals. If the defending players win possession, they should look to quickly transition and play into either of the 2 wide attackers. These attackers can then cross the ball into the box unopposed, replicating a fast counter-attack. This drill encourages both build-up play and rapid transitions into attacking situations.

Coaching Notes:

• Pass Precision and Timing – The build-up team should focus on the quality and timing of their passes during the rondo phase. Precision in passing and movement off the ball is essential to maintaining possession and progressing the ball forward.

• Pressing and Transition – When defending, players should focus on pressing the ball aggressively to win possession. Once the ball is won, they should transition quickly to a counter-attack, looking to exploit the wide areas for a quick cross into the box.

• Wide Play and Crossing – The wide attackers should focus on making quick, accurate crosses into the box. The crosses should vary in height and delivery, depending on the position of the players in the box, to maximize scoring opportunities.

• Decision-Making and Awareness – Players need to make quick decisions during both the build-up and counter-attacking phases. Knowing when to play simple passes in the rondo or when to release the ball into the wide areas quickly is crucial for creating scoring chances.

Progression 1: Add a Defender to the Wide Areas

Introduce a defender to the wide areas to pressure the crossing players. This will replicate the defensive pressure often seen in a real game situation and force the attackers to work under pressure when delivering crosses.

Focus: Improves decision-making under pressure and the accuracy of crossing.

Progression 2: Limit the Time for the Counter-Attack

Add a time limit for the counter-attack phase. The team that transitions to attack must deliver a cross or attempt a shot within a set period after winning possession.

Focus: Increases urgency in the transition phase and sharpens the ability to move the ball quickly into dangerous areas.
