Instructions/Setup:
This practice is a possession-based drill where each team has 2 players on the end lines and 3-5 players working centrally. When in possession, teams should attempt to make 10 consecutive passes for a point. If the defending team wins possession, they must quickly transfer the ball across to the opposite side of the grid. If successful, the defending team will begin their possession phase with all central players moving over to the opposite grid. This practice focuses on maintaining possession and transitioning quickly after regaining the ball.
Coaching Notes:
• Maintaining Possession – The attacking team should focus on quick, short passes to maintain possession and progress the ball through the grid. Players must be aware of their positioning and movement off the ball to create passing lanes and avoid being trapped by the defenders.
• Pressure and Intensity – Defenders should work on applying pressure and staying compact to limit passing options. They must stay alert to prevent easy passes and look for opportunities to win the ball back through tactical positioning.
• Quick Transition – When the defending team regains possession, they need to make a quick decision to transfer the ball across the grid and move into the opposite grid. This transition phase should be fast to simulate real-game counter-attacking situations.
• End-Line Play – The two players on the end lines must be ready to receive passes and support their team in possession. They should be able to switch positions as needed, moving across the grid to help maintain offensive pressure and provide passing outlets.
Progression 1: Add a Time Limit for Passing
Introduce a time limit for the attacking team to complete their 10 passes. This will increase the tempo of play and add pressure to retain possession while making quick decisions.
Focus: Encourages faster ball movement and more dynamic play under time constraints.
Progression 2: Increase Defensive Pressure
Add an additional defender to the central grid, making the defending team work harder to win possession. This will force the attacking team to adapt and focus on creating better passing angles.
Focus: Increases intensity and forces attacking players to work on quick decision-making and maintaining possession under pressure.
