Instructions/Setup:
This small-sided game starts with a 2v2 attack, where the attacking team must attempt to score into either of the 2 mini goals located ahead of them. While in possession, teams can use the 2 neutral players on the outside (wingers). These wingers are limited to 1 touch and cannot score themselves. The practice continues until the defending team regains possession, at which point they can counter-attack and attempt to score into either of the 2 mini goals. The practice works on both attacking and defensive transitions, with a focus on using wingers for support.
Coaching Notes:
• Attacking Combinations – The attacking team should focus on quick, fluid combinations between the 2v2 players, using the wingers to stretch the defense and create space. The wingers should focus on providing wide support and offering quick passes to maintain offensive pressure.
• Winger Movement – The wingers should be active and provide constant support by making well-timed runs and offering passing options. Since they are limited to 1 touch, they must be precise and make quick decisions to maintain the flow of the attack.
• Defensive Shape and Pressure – The defending team should work on maintaining a compact defensive shape to prevent through balls or crosses from the wingers. They must also press quickly when the ball is played to the wingers to limit their ability to make an impact.
• Transition and Recovery – When possession is regained, the defending team should immediately transition into attack. Players should be ready to exploit the open space and make quick decisions to launch a counter-attack towards the mini goals.
Progression 1: Wingers Can Score
Allow the wingers to score from crosses or passes delivered into the box. This will encourage more dynamic attacking play and give the wingers a more active role in the attack.
Focus: Enhances the role of the wingers in creating and finishing scoring opportunities.
Progression 2: Add a Time Limit for Attacking
Introduce a time limit for the attacking team to score once they have possession, forcing quicker decision-making and more urgent play.
Focus: Increases the speed of play and emphasizes quick transitions and finishing under pressure.
