Instructions/Setup:
This practice allows players to develop their build-up play and work on pressing and counter-pressing. The drill runs as a 7v4, with 4 players located on the outer lines and 3 neutral players (2 of which are goalkeepers) working centrally. The team in possession must maintain the ball and aim to complete a set number of passes, while the defending team works to regain possession. If the defending team wins the ball, they should attempt to counter-attack and score into either of the 2 goals. The 4 outer players can counter-press to prevent the attacking team from scoring. Once the defending team regains possession and scores, they will switch roles with the 4 outer players, becoming the possession team.
Coaching Notes:
• Building from the Back – The team in possession must focus on maintaining patience and composure while working the ball around the field. The goal is to complete multiple short passes to draw the defending team out and open space for a forward progression.
• Pressing Strategy – The defending team should work on applying coordinated, intense pressure to regain possession. They must focus on positioning, cutting off passing lanes, and closing down space quickly to force mistakes. Pressing high and trapping the ball near the touchline can be effective.
• Counter-Pressing – After losing possession, the outer players must immediately work to counter-press, attempting to win the ball back as quickly as possible. This requires quick transitions and an aggressive mindset to stop the opposing team from exploiting the counter-attack.
• Counter-Attacking – Upon regaining possession, the defending team should look to attack quickly, utilizing the neutral players (goalkeepers) to help progress the ball forward. Speed and decision-making are crucial in counter-attacks to exploit the gaps left by the opposing team.
Progression 1: Increase Defensive Pressure
Add additional defenders or reduce the number of neutral players in the middle to increase the pressure on the attacking team. This will challenge the attackers to maintain possession and work through tighter spaces.
Focus: Develops the ability to play under pressure while maintaining possession.
Progression 2: Limit Passes for Attackers
Reduce the number of passes the attacking team is allowed to complete before attempting to score. This will encourage quicker decision-making and a faster build-up.
Focus: Enhances the attacking team's ability to transition from build-up to goal-scoring opportunities efficiently.
