Instructions/Setup:

This technical warm-up allows players to develop their ability to play 1-2 and 3rd man combinations. Players are arranged in a grid with a set number of passes required before progressing the ball to a teammate. The focus is on quick, short passes and understanding the movement of the third player involved in the combination play. The drill can be adjusted to increase the intensity and complexity by incorporating different passing patterns, such as switching the direction of play or introducing defenders.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Passing – Encourage players to focus on quick, accurate passes. The success of 1-2 and 3rd man combinations depends on fast decision-making and fast ball movement. Players should avoid taking extra touches to ensure the pace stays high.

• Third-Man Movement – The third player should always be ready to move into space, looking for areas where they can receive a pass or provide a passing option. They should aim to be ahead of the ball, anticipating the next pass.

• Timing of Runs – For combinations to work effectively, the timing of the player’s runs must be precise. The player receiving the ball after the initial pass should time their run to meet the ball at the right moment, creating space and increasing the chance of success.

• Spacing and Angles – Players should maintain proper spacing and positioning, ensuring they create passing lanes for each other. This helps to keep the ball moving quickly and efficiently, which is key in these types of combination plays.

Progression 1: Introduce Defenders

Introduce 1 or 2 defenders to increase pressure on the attacking team. This will encourage faster decision-making and improve the attacking team's ability to execute combinations under pressure.

Focus: Enhances the ability to play under defensive pressure while maintaining quick, fluid combinations.

Progression 2: Increase the Number of Players

Increase the number of players involved in the passing combinations to build a higher level of complexity. This forces players to think ahead and incorporate more players into the build-up play.

Focus: Develops teamwork and improves understanding of how to create space for others.
