Instructions/Setup:

Play starts with a pass into two attacking players positioned on the edge of the box. As soon as the pass is played, a defender puts pressure on them, and they will play out a 2v1 attack. After completing the first phase, the two attackers must retreat to the restart line. The second defender then becomes live, and a cross from one of the two wide positions will come into the box. The play transitions into a 2v2 attack, simulating a final effort to finish after the initial attacking phase.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Decision-Making – In the 2v1 phase, the attackers need to make quick decisions about whether to shoot or pass. Encourage them to read the defender’s positioning and decide whether to go for goal or create an angle for a teammate.

• Attacking Space – The attacking players must recognize the space available to them. When receiving the ball, they should focus on either turning and facing the goal or driving towards the defender to create a shooting opportunity.

• Crossing and Timing – In the 2v2 phase, the players should focus on delivering precise crosses with timing that fits the attacking players’ runs. The attackers need to time their movements to arrive in the right area, whether it’s near post, far post, or central to the box.

• Defensive Pressure – Defenders should focus on staying compact and preventing attackers from making easy runs into dangerous areas. In the 2v2, they need to communicate and decide when to apply pressure on the ball and when to cover the space.

Progression 1: Add Extra Defenders

Add an additional defender in the 2v2 phase to increase defensive pressure and force the attackers to make quicker decisions under more realistic game conditions.

Focus: Encourages attackers to move quickly and be creative in a more congested area, improving finishing under pressure.

Progression 2: Alter Cross Delivery

Change the method of cross delivery, such as requiring the cross to be lofted or driven, or having the cross come from a different angle (e.g., from a deeper position).

Focus: Develops attackers’ ability to finish from a variety of crosses and different types of deliveries.
