Instructions/Setup:

This rondo breaks a 3D3 formation down into specific zones where the possession team will play 4v2. The team in possession must move the ball from grid to grid, with the 2 outer grids offering larger space and the central grid offering lesser space, replicating a tight and congested midfield zone.

Coaching Notes:

• Ball Movement and Quick Passing – Players in the possession team should focus on moving the ball quickly between the grids. Emphasize one- or two-touch passing to maintain a fast tempo and avoid being closed down by the defenders.

• Awareness of Space – Players must always be aware of their position relative to the space in each grid. When transitioning from the outer grids to the central grid, players need to adjust their positioning to deal with the increased pressure in the tighter space.

• Defender Positioning and Pressuring – The defending players must remain compact and work together to close down passing lanes and limit the space available to the attacking team. Communication is key to maintaining defensive shape and ensuring the possession team doesn’t break through.

• Transition and Counter-Pressing – Once the defending team wins possession, they should focus on transitioning quickly into an attacking mindset, using the outer grids to exploit space and counter-attack. Encourage immediate pressure to prevent the attacking team from regaining the ball.

Progression 1: Increase Pressing Intensity

Allow the defending team to add an additional player after every successful pass made by the possession team (4v3, 4v4, etc.). This progression will increase the defensive pressure and force the attacking team to adjust their passing and positioning.

Focus: This progression tests the possession team’s ability to deal with changing defensive numbers and to find solutions under more pressure.

Progression 2: Add Target Zones

Add mini-goals or target zones at the edge of the grid, where the possession team must pass the ball into before completing the transition.

Focus: This progression encourages the possession team to focus on passing accuracy and precise movement when transitioning between the grids, ensuring that each pass leads to a productive outcome.
