1/3 Pitch
Instructions/Setup:
Play starts with a pass from the defenders into one of the three attacking players. Upon receiving the ball, the attacking players must attack 3v2 and attempt to score into the goal.
If the attacking team scores, the defending 2 must sprint up and back down through the two gates located on either side of the pitch. If the attacking 3 fail to score, they must sprint down and back up through the same two gates.
Coaching Notes:
• Attacking Speed and Decision Making – The attacking players should focus on quick decision-making, utilizing the overload to exploit the 3v2 advantage. Encourage direct runs towards goal, mixing up their approach between dribbling and passing to break down the defenders.
• Defensive Compactness and Communication – The defending team must communicate and maintain a compact shape while defending the 3v2 overload. They should work together to funnel attackers towards less dangerous areas and reduce goal-scoring opportunities.
• Transition to Sprints – After each attack, emphasize the importance of quickly transitioning into the sprints. Players should push themselves to recover quickly, whether they are attacking or defending, as the sprinting component adds an additional layer of physicality and intensity to the drill.
• Restoring Positional Balance – When the defenders fail to stop the attack, they must be quick to recover, sprinting through the gates before immediately returning to defensive positions. Similarly, if the attacking team doesn’t score, they must transition quickly into defense for the next rep.
Progression 1: Add Time Limit
Set a time limit for each attacking phase, encouraging the attacking players to complete their 3v2 and shoot on goal within a set time frame (e.g., 10 seconds).
Focus: This progression emphasizes speed in the attack and quick decision-making, as well as time management for the attacking team.
Progression 2: Switch Attacking and Defensive Roles
After a set number of repetitions or once one team has scored a certain amount, switch the attacking and defending roles to ensure all players engage in both attacking and defensive situations.
Focus: This progression provides balanced practice for all players, ensuring they develop skills in both attacking and defending while maintaining high-intensity sprints.
