1/2 Pitch
Instructions/Setup:
This rondo breaks a 4D2 formation down into specific zones where the possession team will play 4v2 or 5v2. The team in possession must move the ball from grid to grid, with the attacking grid having an extra player who can roam freely inside to create a 5v2. This roaming player replicates a creative number 10 role, adding flexibility and creativity to the possession.
Coaching Notes:
• Fluidity and Movement – The key for the team in possession is constant movement. Encourage the possession players to rotate positions, with the roaming player (number 10) creating space and offering passing options in the attacking grid. This movement will help stretch the defensive team and break their shape.
• Quick Passing and Switching Play – Emphasize quick, sharp passing with one or two touches to keep the tempo high and prevent the defenders from closing down the space. Encourage the possession team to switch play quickly from one grid to the next, making use of the extra player in the attacking grid to stretch the defense.
• Defensive Pressure and Positioning – The defending team should focus on maintaining compactness and good positioning. The 4 defenders should work together to apply pressure to the ball while covering the passing lanes, trying to force mistakes or recover possession by intercepting passes.
• Role of the Roaming Player – The roaming player in the attacking grid should be encouraged to look for pockets of space and be unpredictable in their movement, similar to the role of a creative attacking midfielder or number 10. This player should always be an option for the ball, but also be able to support the other attacking players with runs into deeper or wider positions.
Progression 1: Limit Number of Touches for Defenders
Limit the defenders to only 1 or 2 touches to increase the intensity of the drill and force the attacking team to move the ball quickly.
Focus: This progression encourages faster decision-making and sharp passing from the possession team while testing the defenders' ability to react quickly and close down space.
Progression 2: Add a 3rd Defending Player
Introduce a third defending player in the grid to create a more challenging 5v3 situation. This forces the possession team to be even more creative with their movement and passing.
Focus: This progression adds complexity to the drill, increasing the pressure on the possession team and improving their ability to break down more compact defensive setups.
