Instructions/Setup:


In this practice, players develop the ability to dribble at speed with the ball while under pressure from behind. The two attacking players must dribble and combine before scoring into the mini goal, once the ball has crossed the dotted line. The two defending players must make recovery runs and attempt to stop the attacking duo from scoring by putting them under pressure, forcing a mistake, or regaining possession.


Coaching Notes:


• Dribbling with Speed and Control – Emphasize the importance of dribbling at full speed while maintaining control of the ball. The attacking players should focus on quick changes of direction to keep the defenders off balance. Encourage them to use their body to shield the ball from the defenders, especially when under pressure.


• Effective Combination Play – The attacking players should work together to create space and create an overload. This could involve quick passes, one-twos, or overlapping runs to break down the defensive structure. Stress the importance of timing and movement off the ball to support each other in tight spaces.


• Defensive Recovery and Pressure – The defenders must focus on making quick recovery runs after losing initial position. They should work on closing down the attacking players quickly, forcing them to make decisions under pressure. Encourage defenders to be proactive in their attempts to regain possession or block shooting lanes.


• Finishing Under Pressure – The attacking players need to be clinical in their finishing once they have created an opening. The emphasis should be on shooting with composure and precision when presented with a chance to score into the mini goal. Encourage them to be aware of the defender’s positioning and adjust their shots accordingly.


Progression 1: Add a Neutral Attacking Player

Introduce a neutral attacking player who plays in the space between the defenders and the goal. This player can help with combination play, creating a 3v2 overload in favor of the attackers.

Focus: This progression allows the attacking team to work with an extra player to open up space and practice fluid combinations under pressure.


Progression 2: Limit Defenders to One Recovery Run

Limit the defenders to only one recovery run, after which they must stay in position or act as a passive defender. This will increase the attacking team’s opportunities to break the defensive line and score.

Focus: This progression forces the defending players to be more strategic in their recovery and positioning, while the attackers get more chances to break through and practice finishing.
