Instructions/Setup:
This is a 2-phase practice. Play starts with a 2v1 attack in the first zone, where the two attacking players are simply looking to progress through the zone via passing combinations or dribbles. Once through the first zone, the attacking players must complete a 2+1v2 phase, where they are attempting to score in any of the two mini goals.
The attacking two are encouraged to make use of the neutral end line player once they arrive in the second zone, to create a 3v2 advantage.
Coaching Notes:
• Progressing Through the First Zone – In the initial 2v1 phase, the attacking team should focus on making quick, sharp passes or taking on defenders to progress through the zone. Encourage the attacking player in possession to either use a 1-2 pass or dribble with pace to break the defensive line.
• Utilizing the Neutral Player in the Second Zone – Upon entering the second zone, the attacking players should make use of the neutral end line player. This player should be used to create a 3v2 overload, allowing the attacking team to work with an extra player to break down the defense. The neutral player must stay onside and be available to receive the ball to facilitate quick combinations.
• Timing and Movement – The attackers should coordinate their runs and passes, ensuring they work together to exploit the overload. The player with the ball should be aware of the runners and time passes effectively. The off-the-ball player must make sure their runs are timed well to provide an option for the ball carrier.
• Defensive Awareness – The defending team needs to be disciplined in tracking runs and maintaining good positioning. They must work together to minimize the impact of the extra player in the second phase and limit goal-scoring opportunities. Encourage defenders to be proactive in closing down the passing lanes and reacting quickly to transitions.
Progression 1: Add a Second Neutral Player
Introduce a second neutral player in the attacking zone who can join the attack at any point. This gives the attacking team a greater numerical advantage (4v2) and forces the defending team to adjust their defensive shape.
Focus: This progression provides more space for the attackers to create and finish, helping them practice exploiting overloads more efficiently.
Progression 2: Limit the Attackers’ Touches
Limit the number of touches the attacking players can have in the first zone (e.g., two touches max per player). This increases the speed of play and forces the attackers to make quicker decisions and move the ball faster.
Focus: This progression encourages the attackers to focus on quick combinations and dynamic play to progress the ball through the first zone more efficiently.
