Instructions/Setup:

This is a 2-phase practice aimed at helping attackers develop their ability to transition quickly and effectively. Play starts with a 2v2 attack (Phase 1). Once a goal is scored or the ball goes dead, both attackers must transition to opposite sides of the grid, where they will defend in a 1v1 scenario (Phase 2).

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Transition from Attack to Defense

Encourage attackers to transition quickly after the 2v2 phase, focusing on switching their mindset from offensive to defensive play. The faster they get into position for the 1v1 phase, the better their chances to successfully defend or regain possession.

• Defensive Positioning & Timing

Once attackers switch to defense, remind them to focus on proper body positioning and timing of tackles. They should aim to force the attacker wide or into less dangerous areas, avoiding getting caught out by a quick move or feint.

• Speed of Play in the 2v2

In the 2v2 phase, attackers should aim to create overloads and quick passing combinations to break down the defense. Speed of thought and decision-making is key in this phase, so they should always look for quick passes and movement off the ball.

• 1v1 Decision Making & Composure

In the 1v1 phase, defenders must be composed and not dive in too quickly. Attackers should look to be direct, using their body to protect the ball and either create a shot on goal or a passing opportunity. Encourage attackers to make confident decisions, whether it’s trying to beat the defender or pass to a teammate.

Progression 1: Add a Time Limit for Transition

Add a time limit between phases (e.g., 5 seconds after the ball goes dead) to challenge players to transition more quickly. This will increase the intensity and test players' decision-making under pressure.

Focus: This progression improves the speed of transitions and encourages faster recovery after losing possession.

Progression 2: Add a Neutral Attacker

After the 2v2 phase, add a neutral attacker who can join the team with possession. This creates a temporary 3v2 situation during the transition to 1v1.

Focus: This progression simulates real game pressure, where attackers must adjust their defending and attacking responsibilities as the numbers change.
