Instructions/Setup:
Play begins with a pass from the defender to the attacker. As soon as the attacker takes their first touch, a second defender joins the practice to create a 1v2 situation. The attacker’s goal is to maintain speed and exploit any space available in order to keep the situation favorable and avoid it becoming a complete 1v2 scenario. The attacker must attack quickly to create opportunities and maintain an advantage over the defenders.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick First Touch
Encourage the attacker to take a quick and positive first touch, pushing the ball into space and setting up a potential attack. The quicker the first touch, the more space the attacker will have before the second defender arrives, making it easier to keep the situation as a 1v1 for longer.
• Exploiting the Space
The key to success in a 1v2 situation is to exploit the space and keep the defenders off balance. Encourage the attacker to use their pace, agility, and creativity to get past the defenders. Changing direction quickly, using feints, and creating separation from the defenders are all essential strategies for success.
• Composure in Tight Situations
Once the second defender joins, remind the attacker to stay composed and make calculated decisions. Rushing or losing control of the ball will allow the defenders to regain the advantage. Focus on the attacker’s ability to read the situation, control the ball under pressure, and make an intelligent decision to either shoot or pass.
• Creating Angles and Timing
The attacker should aim to manipulate the defenders by creating angles and timing their movements effectively. This could include cutting inside to draw the defenders and create space, or using quick changes of pace to force one defender out of position. Encourage attackers to be unpredictable in their approach, making it difficult for the defenders to anticipate their next move.
Progression 1: Add More Defenders
Introduce a third defender who can act as a "support defender" that enters after the 1v2. This progression simulates a more complex situation where attackers must deal with additional defensive pressure.
Focus: This increases the difficulty, requiring the attacker to make quicker decisions and create more space to retain the upper hand.
Progression 2: Limit Time to Attack
Reduce the time the attacker has to take a shot or make a pass once the second defender enters. This increases the urgency of the decision-making process and ensures that attackers keep up the pace.
Focus: This progression trains players to make fast, effective decisions under pressure, simulating real game scenarios.
