Instructions/Setup:
This practice begins with a double-gridded 5v2 rondo. The team out of possession is attempting to regain the ball or knock it into the outer grid. Once the ball is won or successfully passed into the outer grid, the defending team transitions into defensive players, and the practice expands into an 8v5 rondo. The team that was in possession now has more space to work with, and they aim to maintain possession and keep the ball moving efficiently.
Coaching Notes:
• Transition Speed & Awareness
The key to this practice is how quickly players transition from defending to attacking. Once the ball is won or passed into the outer grid, defending players must immediately shift into offensive positions and support the new attackers. Encourage fast thinking and rapid transition to capitalize on the overload in the larger grid.
• Focus on Movement & Support
In the 8v5 phase, it’s essential for players to provide continuous support for the ball carrier. Emphasize intelligent off-the-ball movement to ensure passing lanes are always open, allowing the team to maintain fluidity and possession. The five defenders in the larger grid should look to press and close down passing options, creating a more challenging environment.
• Ball Speed & Decision-Making
In both the 5v2 and 8v5 phases, the team in possession should focus on quick, sharp passing and excellent decision-making. Encourage players to move the ball efficiently while scanning for the best option. This will help them progress the ball effectively while avoiding being trapped by the defenders.
• Defensive Pressure & Pressing Triggers
The defending team needs to work together to regain possession. Remind them to focus on pressing as a unit, not allowing too much space for the attacking team to exploit. Use pressing triggers (e.g., poor first touch, excessive dribbling, or a poor pass) to initiate defensive pressure. If they successfully win the ball, they must transition quickly into the 8v5 to maintain defensive balance.
Progression 1: Limit Touches for Attacking Team
To increase difficulty, limit the number of touches each player can take in the 8v5 phase (e.g., two-touch). This forces the attacking team to play at a faster tempo and improves their passing and decision-making under pressure.
Focus: This progression encourages quicker ball movement and sharper decision-making under increased pressure.
Progression 2: Add More Defenders
Increase the number of defenders in the 8v5 phase to make it more challenging for the attacking team. For example, move to a 7v6 or even an 8v7 scenario.
Focus: This progression enhances the defensive team’s ability to press effectively while pushing the attacking team to play even more quickly and cohesively.
