Instructions/Setup:

In this positional rondo, the possession team plays 4v2 in the ball-sided grid and aims to maintain possession while looking to switch play continuously. Outside the grid, two players work back and forth between themselves. Once the ball inside the grid has been transferred, one of the outside players will transition into the grid to support the ball. The focus is on maintaining balance in possession and ensuring that transitions between grids are quick and efficient.

Coaching Notes:

• Positional Awareness

Encourage the possession team to maintain good positional balance at all times. Players should ensure they are always in a position to receive the ball and help with the switching of play. Make sure the player on the ball has options to pass to, while others move into space to support.

• Quick Transitions

When the ball is switched to the outside, encourage the outside players to transition quickly into the grid. The speed of transition is key to ensuring the possession team can maintain the flow of the drill and keep the opposition defending. Timing and sharpness in movement are vital for keeping the rhythm of the practice.

• Ball Movement and Switching Play

In the ball-sided grid, stress the importance of quick, accurate passes to maintain possession while also looking for opportunities to switch play. The players inside should focus on quick ball circulation, looking to exploit space and create gaps for the outside players to transition in.

• Defensive Pressure and Spatial Awareness

For the defending players, their goal is to apply pressure and force mistakes in the ball-sided grid. They must work hard to close down passing lanes and force the possession team to make quick decisions. Encourage defenders to stay compact, working together to limit passing options.

Progression 1: Limit Touches for Possession Team

Limit the number of touches each player can take (e.g., 2 touches maximum) to increase the speed of play and force quicker decisions.

Focus: This progression encourages quicker ball movement and increases the intensity of the practice. It also helps the players focus on efficient passing and quick transitions.

Progression 2: Add More Defenders

Increase the number of defenders in the central grid (e.g., 4v2 becomes 4v3).

Focus: This will force the possession team to adapt, using better movement and switching to break down a stronger defensive presence. It simulates playing against a more structured opposition and improves decision-making under pressure.
