Instructions/Setup:

In this attacking practice, one of the three attacking players drops between the lines to receive a ball from one of the outer coaches. Once the first touch is made, play becomes live, and a 3v2 attack will unfold. This practice is multi-sided, meaning two attacks can play out at once, or they can play alternatively in a head-to-head format. The focus is on receiving the ball in pockets of space, quick decision-making, and finishing under pressure.

Coaching Notes:

• Receiving Between the Lines

Encourage the attacking players to drop into the space between the lines, keeping their body open to the ball and scanning for both the ball and the defenders around them. The first touch should be sharp and directed into space to set up a quick attack. Teach players to create space for themselves by using intelligent movement and not standing still.

• Quick Transition to Attack

Once the ball is received, the attacking player should quickly transition into a 3v2 attacking situation. Players should aim to play quickly to exploit the numerical advantage and finish the attack efficiently. Encourage players to make quick passes, look for a combination play, and finish under pressure to improve speed of play.

• Decision-Making in 3v2

In a 3v2 situation, the attacking team should focus on making the correct decisions based on the defenders’ positioning. If one defender is committed to pressing, players should be encouraged to exploit the space left open. The attacker on the ball should be decisive, whether to take on the defender, play a quick pass, or look for an immediate shot on goal.

• Finishing Under Pressure

Once the ball is played into the attacking players, they should focus on finishing quickly and efficiently. They must be aware of the pressure from the defending players and make sure they finish accurately, using the correct technique for the situation. Encourage calm and composed finishing in front of goal, whether it's a first-time shot or a controlled finish.

Progression 1: Add Pressure to Receiving Player

Introduce a passive defender to apply pressure on the receiving player as soon as they take their first touch.

Focus: This progression forces the receiving player to handle pressure, improve their first touch under pressure, and make quicker decisions on the ball.

Progression 2: Limit Touches for Attackers

Limit the number of touches the attacking players can take (e.g., 2 touches maximum).

Focus: This will increase the intensity of the practice and improve the attacking players' ability to make quick decisions, improve ball control, and execute quick passes in tight spaces.
