Instructions/Setup:

In this passing practice, the side players will alternate continuously to play 3rd man passing combinations while making short, sharp movements to and from the outer cones. The focus is on quick, dynamic movement and timing of the passes to keep the ball moving quickly and effectively.

Coaching Notes:

• Timing of Movement

Players must time their movements well to receive the ball in space. Encourage the side players to make angled runs, timing their movement to meet the pass at the right moment and position. They should always be thinking one step ahead, anticipating the next pass.

• Quick and Accurate Passing

The emphasis is on quick, sharp passes. Encourage players to play with accuracy and pace, making sure each pass is directed to a teammate’s feet or space. The third man pass should be delivered with enough pace to allow the next player to continue the move without hesitation.

• Use of Space

Players should be aware of the space around them and use it effectively. The movement should not just be about running to the cone, but rather about creating space, both for themselves and their teammates. Proper use of space will allow for easier third man combinations and better flow in the practice.

• Transition Between Attacking and Defending Roles

As players alternate positions, they need to transition quickly between attacking and defensive mindsets. After a pass or combination, players should be ready to switch roles, either by pressing or supporting in different areas, ensuring fluid transitions within the practice.

Progression 1: Increase Passing Distance

Allow the side players to pass over a longer distance or to a player farther away to develop their ability to execute third man combinations in a more expansive scenario.

Focus: This progression works on both passing technique over longer distances and better spatial awareness.

Progression 2: Add a Defender

Introduce a passive defender who can close down space or make interceptions, forcing the attackers to be quicker and more precise with their passes.

Focus: This progression adds a defensive challenge, helping players improve under pressure and develop decision-making skills.
