Instructions/Setup:
This hexagonal passing practice is designed to replicate various build-up patterns used in a back-3 formation. Players form a hexagon, with one player in the center and others positioned around the outside. The players on the outside pass the ball to the center player, who must control and distribute the ball back out to another player. This drill can be adjusted for different age groups and skill levels by altering the distances between players and the types of patterns used.
Coaching Notes:
• Focus on Positional Awareness
Players should be aware of their positioning relative to each other, especially in tight spaces. Encourage players to move dynamically in order to create passing lanes. The player in the center should be scanning and anticipating passes before they arrive, ensuring smooth and quick transitions.
• Pass and Move with Purpose
Players must move immediately after passing the ball to maintain the fluidity of the drill. Encourage purposeful movement to ensure the ball is constantly circulating, and players are always ready to receive a pass or create a new passing option.
• Precision in Passing
Accuracy in passing is key for maintaining tempo in this drill. Players should aim to deliver crisp, precise passes to the player in the center, ensuring they’re not forced to make awkward touches. The center player should use a good first touch to control the ball and distribute it quickly.
• Adapt for Different Skill Levels
For beginners or lower skill levels, reduce the distance between players and allow more time for each pass. As the players improve, increase the distance, add pressure (e.g., with defenders or timed passing), and introduce more complex patterns to simulate different tactical situations.
Progression 1: Add Defenders to Increase Pressure
Introduce 1 or 2 defenders to the central area to apply pressure on the center player. This will encourage quicker passing and decision-making under pressure.
Focus: This progression simulates real-game pressure and forces the attacking team to make quicker, more accurate decisions.
Progression 2: Vary Passing Patterns
Introduce different passing patterns, such as 1-2s or diagonal switches, to challenge the players' creativity and ability to build attacks in different formations.
Focus: This progression helps improve a team's ability to break lines and switch play, which is crucial in a back-3 setup.
