Instructions/Setup:

In this passing activation warm-up, players will work on various passing combinations, including overlaps, underlaps, and 3rd man runs. Players will move through a series of short, sharp passing drills that emphasize timing, movement, and accuracy. This warm-up can be adjusted for different skill levels by varying the distance between players or adding pressure from defenders as needed.

Coaching Notes:

• Timing of Runs

Players should focus on the timing of their runs, especially during overlaps, underlaps, and 3rd man combinations. The player making the overlapping or underlapping run should do so at the right moment to create space and provide a passing option for the player with the ball.

• Quick Passing and Movement

Encourage players to pass the ball quickly and to move into space after passing. The focus should be on moving the ball efficiently and not letting it "stick" at any point. Movement off the ball should be as important as the passing itself to ensure smooth transitions and fluid play.

• Focus on Communication

Players should communicate with each other during the warm-up. Whether calling for the ball, directing traffic, or signaling a run, effective communication helps synchronize the movement and passing. This is crucial for making quick, decisive plays during real-game situations.

• Accuracy and Weight of Passes

Ensure that players focus on the accuracy and weight of their passes. Over- or under-hit passes can disrupt the flow and timing of the drill. Encourage players to deliver crisp, controlled passes, ensuring they are the correct weight for the receiver to continue their movement smoothly.

Progression 1: Add Defenders for Pressure

Introduce passive defenders who apply light pressure to the ball carrier. This will force players to make quicker decisions and execute their passes under more realistic conditions.

Focus: This progression helps improve decision-making under pressure and simulates game-like situations where players need to react to defenders.

Progression 2: Vary Passing Combinations

Switch up the passing patterns by introducing variations such as 1-2s, wall passes, or diagonal switches. This keeps the warm-up dynamic and challenges players to adapt to different attacking styles.

Focus: This progression helps players develop versatility in their passing combinations, improving their ability to create chances from different positions.
