Instructions/Setup:
This attacking practice is designed around two consecutive 2v1 scenarios, promoting quick decision-making and exploiting numerical advantages. The pitch is split into two horizontal zones. In each zone, there is one defender and two attackers. The attacking team must beat the first defender in Zone 1 before immediately transitioning into Zone 2 to create a goalscoring opportunity against the second defender. The drill runs continuously for a set period (e.g., 3–4 minutes) with the same two defenders working through fatigue and repeated pressure situations.
Coaching Notes:
• Overload Exploitation – Emphasize creating width and depth in the 2v1. Attackers should avoid being too narrow and must understand how to manipulate the defender’s positioning to create a passing or dribbling lane.
• Speed of Play – Encourage quick, purposeful play to take advantage of the overload before the defender can recover or delay. The faster the attackers transition from Zone 1 to Zone 2, the greater their chance of success.
• Decision-Making – Players must decide when to dribble, pass, or shoot based on the defender’s positioning. Promote scanning and early decision-making to keep the attack fluid.
• Defensive Resilience – For the defenders, this drill builds stamina, composure under fatigue, and 1v2 defending skills like delaying, blocking passing lanes, and timing tackles.
Progression 1: Live Defender Recovery
After the attackers pass into Zone 2, the defender from Zone 1 is allowed to recover and join the play, creating a 2v2 situation in the second zone.
Focus:
Improves attacking players’ ability to recognize transitions and make quicker decisions under increased defensive pressure.
Progression 2: Limited Touches in Zone 1
Limit attackers to a maximum of two touches each in the first zone, forcing quicker combinations and sharper movement.
Focus:
Increases tempo and challenges players to think and act faster while still executing quality passes and movements.
