Instructions/Setup:

In this high-tempo attacking practice, two players begin by dribbling toward the center, each going around their designated pole before finishing on goal unopposed. Immediately after their finishes, both players transition into defenders for a new phase, where two more players enter to attack in two simultaneous 1v1 scenarios. The practice flows in rotations, giving all players multiple reps focusing on finishing, transition speed, and both attacking and defending in 1v1 situations.

Coaching Notes:

• Explosive Starts – Players should focus on a sharp, controlled dribble around the pole and immediately look to finish with pace and accuracy. Encourage variety in finishing (low driven, placed, or powerful shots).

• Transition Speed – After finishing, players must instantly shift into a defensive mindset. Quick reactions and defensive positioning are key to delaying or stopping the oncoming 1v1 attacker.

• 1v1 Defending – Emphasize defensive footwork, body shape, and staying on the attacker’s inside shoulder. Defenders should aim to delay and force attackers away from goal.

• 1v1 Attacking – Encourage attackers to be direct, creative, and decisive. Use body feints, quick changes of direction, and speed to beat the defender and finish.

Progression 1: Competitive Scorekeeping

Award points for successful finishes in both phases (initial unopposed and 1v1). Keep score between pairs or teams.

Focus:

Adds a competitive edge, encouraging quality finishing and intensity in both attacking and defensive efforts.

Progression 2: Add a Passive Recovery Defender

After the unopposed finish, have the original shooter track back into the 1v1 zone as a recovering defender to create pressure from behind.

Focus:

Simulates real-game moments where attackers must finish under recovering pressure, and defenders learn to delay and recover from disadvantageous positions.
