Half Pitch

Instructions/Setup:

This practice begins with a dribble from the deepest central attacker, initiating a 4v3 attacking overload. The ball carrier passes to one of two wide players, triggering the attack. From that moment, four attackers (including the initial runner) play against three defenders in a dynamic attacking phase. The initial ball carrier is encouraged to continue their run as a supporting midfielder, either arriving late into the box or creating space with off-the-ball movement. The focus is on exploiting overloads through timing, positioning, and quick combinations.

Coaching Notes:

• Midfield Runner Timing – The initial ball carrier must time their support run effectively. Arriving too early can crowd space; arriving late can create the perfect cutback or shooting opportunity.

• Width and Depth – Wide players should stay high and wide to stretch the back line and open passing channels. Central attackers must create depth by running behind or offering central support.

• Clever Movement – Encourage attackers to use decoy runs, rotations, and diagonal movements to drag defenders out of position and create space for teammates.

• Speed and Precision – The overload must be exploited quickly. Encourage quick ball movement, one-touch combinations, and decisive final actions (pass, cross, or shot).

Progression 1: Recovering Midfielder Defender

Add a recovering defender who joins from behind after the ball is played wide, potentially balancing the numbers to 4v4.

Focus:

Increases intensity and tests the attackers’ ability to recognize shifting overloads and adjust movement/timing accordingly.

Progression 2: Directional Defending with Counter Goal

Allow the defending team to counter into a mini goal if they win possession, forcing attackers to protect against transition and encouraging better structure in overload play.

Focus:

Develops attacking shape awareness, transition defense, and encourages purposeful possession with defensive cover in mind.
