Instructions/Setup:

This finishing practice focuses on creating and finishing goal-scoring opportunities from 3rd-man through balls. The drill begins with a passing combination between two players, one of whom will lay off a ball for a third player making a late run into space. The third player receives a well-weighted through ball and finishes on goal. The practice allows attackers to work on timing, movement off the ball, and finishing after receiving a pass that exploits the defense’s gaps.

Coaching Notes:

• 3rd-Man Run Timing – The key focus is on the timing of the third player’s run. They must not anticipate too early or too late, timing their run to receive the ball in stride and with space to attack.

• Combination Play – Encourage quick, fluid combinations between players. The second player in the combination should aim to deliver the through ball to the third player with accuracy and weight to avoid the defense recovering.

• Finishing with Composure – Players must focus on composure and accuracy when finishing, ideally using one touch or quickly setting themselves up for a first-time finish. Encourage shooting to the corners or keeping the ball low.

• Positive Attacking Mindset – Encourage attackers to always look for forward options, making positive runs and constantly scanning for potential through balls.

Progression 1: Add a Defender Pressuring the 3rd-Man

Introduce a passive defender who pressures the 3rd player just before receiving the through ball, forcing quicker decisions and tighter finishes.

Focus:

Encourages the player receiving the through ball to adjust their timing, positioning, and finishing technique under pressure.

Progression 2: Multiple Runners into the Box

Add additional runners into the box, with the third player now needing to assess and choose the best option for a pass or finish (e.g., lay off to a player arriving at the far post, or finish directly).

Focus:

Develops decision-making in fast-paced attacking scenarios and improves the attacker’s ability to read space and choose the best option in the final third.
