Instructions/Setup:
This finishing practice focuses on attacking movements and finishing from cutbacks. The sequence starts with a short passing combination between central players, leading to a threaded through ball into a wide runner. The wide player drives toward the byline and delivers a cutback into the box, where a single attacker times their run for an unopposed finish. Emphasis is placed on timing, movement, and clean execution in front of goal.
Coaching Notes:
• Wide Player Delivery – Encourage consistent cutbacks pulled into the edge of the 6-yard box or penalty spot. Vary the angle and speed depending on the runner’s position.
• Attacker’s Run Timing – The attacker must time their run so they arrive at the right moment, avoiding being too early or late. Emphasize scanning and reading the wide player’s body shape.
• First-Time Finishing – Encourage players to finish with one touch when possible. Focus on balance, body shape, and hitting the corners.
• Quality of Combination Play – Ensure initial passes and through balls are played with sharpness and accuracy to replicate game tempo.
Progression 1: Passive Defender in the Box
Add a passive defender near the cutback zone to create mild interference and force the attacker to adjust their movement and finishing angle.
Focus:
Helps the attacker refine movement in tight areas and develop composure when finishing under slight pressure.
Progression 2: Two Attackers Timing Separate Runs
Introduce a second attacker into the box, with one making a near-post run and the other arriving centrally or far post.
Focus:
Promotes varied attacking options and decision-making for both the crosser and the finishers. Encourages awareness and communication in front of goal.
