Instructions/Setup:

This practice focuses on both finishing and defending in attacking 3v2 situations. The drill begins with two attackers receiving a pass and having a maximum of 2 touches: the first touch to control the ball and the second touch to finish the attack. After the two finishes are complete, the two attackers will quickly transition to defense, where they will work together to defend against a 3v2 attack from the opposing team.

Coaching Notes:

• Finishing Under Pressure – The attackers should focus on completing the finish with two controlled touches. The first touch should be precise to set up the second, ensuring that they can finish with accuracy under game-like pressure.

• Quick Transition to Defend – After completing the finishing phase, attackers must immediately transition to defense, shifting from an attacking to a defensive mindset. Emphasize quick decision-making to close down space and mark attacking players effectively.

• Defending 3v2 – Defenders must communicate and work together to cover the attacking players. Focus on positioning, tracking runs, and deciding when to engage the ball carrier and when to cover the passing lanes.

• Shooting with Composure – Attackers should remain calm and composed when finishing, focusing on placing the ball in the corners or aiming for the near or far post. The goal is to develop the ability to finish under pressure with limited touches.

Progression 1: Add a Defender in the Finishing Phase

Introduce a passive defender to apply light pressure during the finishing phase, forcing attackers to make quicker decisions and improve their ability to finish under slightly more pressure.

Focus:

Increases the intensity of the finishing phase and encourages attackers to handle defensive pressure while making quick decisions.

Progression 2: Increase the Speed of Transition

Reduce the time attackers have to transition from attack to defense. For example, once the finishing phase is complete, give the attackers only a few seconds to get into their defensive positions. This will create a sense of urgency and mimic game-like transitions.

Focus:

Improves fitness, mental focus, and the ability to transition quickly between attack and defense.
