Instructions/Setup:
In this 3-phase practice, the area is set up using two penalty areas positioned back-to-back (vertically), with one goalkeeper in the main goal. There are 3 neutral players stationed outside the grid, each with a ball, who will serve the ball into the attacking players. The attacking team will then work through 3 consecutive 2v2 attacks. The neutral players can assist the attacking players with one-touch passes in the deeper zone but cannot enter the attacking zone.
Each phase of the practice emphasizes different aspects of the 2v2 attack, such as positioning, movement, and decision-making, while working with the neutral players to create overload situations in the attacking zones.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Combinations: The attacking players should look to combine quickly, using one-touch passes to break down the defending team. Emphasize the importance of quick decision-making in tight spaces.
• Use of Neutral Players: The neutral players can assist by providing extra support with one-touch passes from the deeper zone. Ensure that the attacking players use these passes effectively to progress the play quickly and create goal-scoring opportunities.
• Attacking Movement: Players should focus on their movement off the ball to create space and make themselves available for passes. The attackers must work together to create overloads and open up spaces in the opposition's defense.
• Defensive Awareness: Defenders should focus on their positioning to prevent the attacking team from exploiting spaces. Encourage communication between the defenders to effectively deal with the overload situations created by the neutral players.
Progression 1: Add More Neutral Players:
Increase the number of neutral players on the outside of the grid to create even more overload situations in favor of the attacking team. This will challenge the defenders to communicate and work harder to close down spaces.
Focus: Enhances the ability of attackers to exploit overloads, improve combination play, and make quicker decisions when under pressure.
Progression 2: Limit Neutral Player Touches:
Reduce the number of touches the neutral players are allowed to make to force the attacking players to work faster and more efficiently. This also helps the attackers focus on their timing and runs to receive passes.
Focus: Improves attacking speed and the ability to execute quick, decisive plays with fewer options, simulating a more realistic game scenario.
