Instructions/Setup:

This 2-phase finishing drill works on two specific types of attacking movements that are crucial for forwards in game situations. The first phase focuses on completing an unopposed finish after making a run in behind a defensive line, while the second phase works on running across the face of a defensive line before finishing.

The drill is designed to improve both finishing under no pressure and the timing of movements to break down defensive lines.

Coaching Notes:

• Phase 1 – Movement in Behind: The attacker must time their run well to receive the ball in behind the defensive line. Encourage players to start their run from an onside position and to stay alert for the right moment to make the attacking run. They should focus on staying calm and composed when receiving the ball to finish effectively.

• Phase 2 – Movement Across the Face: In the second phase, the forward needs to make a run across the defensive line to receive the ball. Emphasize the importance of quick, sharp changes of direction to deceive defenders and make themselves available for a cross or through ball. The movement should be purposeful, with the aim to get in front of the defender to receive a pass in a dangerous area.

• Finishing Technique: For both phases, players should focus on finishing with composure, using the inside of the foot for placement or the laces for power, depending on the situation. Encourage them to keep their heads over the ball and strike with accuracy rather than power.

• Timing of Runs: Timing is key in both phases. In Phase 1, players should focus on making their run when the ball is being played through, ensuring they stay onside and time their finish correctly. In Phase 2, the forward must time their cross the defensive line to be in the right position for the pass.

Progression 1: Add Defensive Pressure:

Introduce one defender to apply light pressure to the attacker after they make their movement in behind. This will force the forward to finish under pressure, improving their composure in game situations.

Focus: Enhances the ability to finish under pressure and improve timing when running behind a defensive line.

Progression 2: Crosses and Variations:

Add a wide player who will serve in crosses for the attacker to run across the face of the defense. Players will now need to focus on their movement across the defensive line to meet the cross, making sure they time their movement to be in front of the defender.

Focus: Improves attacking runs across the defensive line and finishing from crosses.
