Instructions/Setup:
In this long ball mastery warm-up, players will work on developing set passes and combination play from long balls. Two players are positioned at the top and bottom of the practice area, with two central players positioned closely together in the middle. The ball carrier at the top will play a long, high ball to the furthest central player, who must control the ball with one touch and then allow the second central player to play the ball forwards. The practice then repeats from top to bottom.
This warm-up emphasizes clean ball control, first touch under pressure, and quick combination play to transition the ball effectively over longer distances.
Coaching Notes:
• Ball Control: The central players must focus on their first touch to control the ball cleanly and allow for a smooth progression of play. Encourage players to use the inside of their foot to cushion the ball and direct it toward the second player.
• Timing of Passes: The ball carrier at the top must time their long pass accurately to allow the central players to move into position for the knockdown. The receiving central player should position themselves in anticipation of the ball and be ready to control it cleanly.
• Combination Play: The second central player must be aware of the knockdown and look to play a quick pass forward. This encourages fluid combination play and the ability to shift from defense to attack with minimal touches.
• Communication: Encourage verbal and non-verbal communication between players to coordinate the timing of the passes and movement. Clear communication will help ensure the drill runs smoothly and players are in sync.
Progression 1: Add Defenders:
Introduce one or two defenders who can apply light pressure to the central players receiving the ball. This will encourage the attacking players to maintain their composure and increase the quality of their first touch under pressure.
Focus: Improves the ability to control the ball while under pressure and make effective passes despite defensive presence.
