Instructions/Setup:
This practice is set up with two adjacent grids, each containing a 4v2 rondo. Only one ball is in play between both grids. The objective for the team in possession is to retain the ball under pressure in their grid and look for opportunities to switch the ball to the opposite grid using a third man combination.
The third man concept allows players to disguise and break lines of pressure by involving a supporting player who doesn’t initially receive the first pass but becomes the key link to switch the ball across. Defenders remain in their respective grids and must adjust positioning based on the movement and potential switches.
Coaching Notes:
• Third Man Movement: Encourage players to recognize moments to act as the third man—supporting behind or to the side of the play to allow clean switches between grids.
• Scanning and Awareness: Players must consistently scan both grids to assess where the next pass should go and how to exploit gaps in the defensive shape.
• Body Shape for Switching: Receiving players should open up their body when possible to play forward or switch first time, keeping the tempo high.
• Defensive Shifts: Defenders should anticipate the switch and adjust as a unit, aiming to cut out lanes or intercept through-passes between the grids.
Progression 1: Add a Floating Neutral Player
Introduce one neutral player who operates between both grids to assist with switching play and maintaining possession.
Focus: Promotes third man support, intelligent positioning, and offers an extra passing option to build play.
Progression 2: Limit Touches to Two per Player
Restrict players in both grids to a maximum of two touches.
Focus: Increases the speed of play, demands better decision-making, and encourages sharper movement off the ball.
