Instructions/Setup:
This possession-based rondo is designed to challenge players to play both around and through pressure. Four players are positioned on the outside edges of a square grid, with a fifth teammate located in a smaller central square. Three defenders are placed inside the larger grid, aiming to win back possession during the rondo.
The team of five plays keep-ball (5v3) using short combinations and the central player as a pivot to retain possession under pressure. If the defending trio wins the ball, they immediately transition and attempt to score in any of the four mini goals positioned on the outer sides of the grid. The team that lost possession must instantly counter-press to prevent the shot.
Coaching Notes:
• Support Angles: Wide players must constantly adjust their body shape and positioning to provide clear angles for the central player and switch the point of attack.
• Central Pivot Use: Encourage quick passes in and out of the central square, using the inside player to break pressure and maintain rhythm.
• Counter Pressing Intensity: If possession is lost, players must react instantly and press with speed and cohesion to close down space and delay or prevent the shot.
• Defensive Transition Awareness: Defenders should anticipate loose touches or predictable passes and break quickly once possession is won, choosing the nearest mini goal to exploit.
Progression 1: Limit Outside Touches
Allow only one or two touches for outside players to increase tempo and decision-making speed.
Focus: Promotes sharper passing, quicker support play, and improves scanning under time pressure.
Progression 2: Add a Neutral Floater
Introduce a neutral player who always plays with the team in possession and moves freely within the grid.
Focus: Increases numerical superiority, encouraging more through-ball opportunities and dynamic movement patterns.
