Instructions/Setup:

The drill begins with a 3v1 counter-attack in a central grid. The three attackers aim to score against the lone defender, using quick movement and passing to break through. Two additional defenders are positioned 5 yards behind the grid and can join the defensive phase once the attackers have completed the first phase, aiming to create a 3v3 scenario. The counter-attack phase is short, with the attackers looking to finish quickly while the single defender tries to delay or win the ball.

Once the first phase ends, a second ball is played into the defenders and goalkeeper, who are tasked with building out of the back and attempting to score in two mini goals positioned at the ends of the grid. The three players who were part of the counter-attack now transition to defense, looking to prevent the build-up and stop the attacking team from scoring. The second phase focuses on transitioning quickly from attack to defense, with defenders aiming to regain possession and stop the attacking build-up.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Transition to Attack: Encourage the 3 attacking players to move quickly and decisively, utilizing speed and creativity to break down the single defender in the first phase.

• Defensive Awareness: The 2 recovering defenders must react swiftly, using effective positioning and communication to try and make it a 3v3 before the attacker's finish.

• Building from the Back: When the defenders and goalkeeper are in possession, they should focus on building from the back with short, quick passes, ensuring they use the full width of the grid to create space.

• Transition to Defense: As the counter attackers transition into defenders, they must remain disciplined, focus on positioning, and communicate effectively to prevent the build-up and block passing lanes.

Progression 1: Add Time Pressure

Introduce a time limit for the first phase of the counter-attack (e.g., 15 seconds). If the attackers don’t score in that time, the phase is considered over.

Focus: Increases intensity, forcing players to make faster decisions and transition quickly.

Progression 2: Add Pressing Triggers for Defenders

Once the ball is served into the defensive phase (second phase), the defending players must press the ball within 5 seconds of possession, applying pressure on the goalkeeper and defenders as they build out.

Focus: Encourages quicker, more aggressive defending during the transition and promotes fast-paced defensive decisions.
