Instructions/Setup:
Set up two cones along the top line and two cones directly opposite on the bottom line, creating two vertical lanes. One player begins on the top line and the other on the bottom. The top player moves laterally between their two cones using quick, deceptive footwork and must suddenly tap one of the cones.
As soon as the cone is tapped, the bottom player reacts by tapping the cone on their line that corresponds vertically, then immediately attempts to tag the top player before they can sprint across the bottom line. The drill focuses on reaction time, movement disguise, and acceleration under pressure.
Coaching Notes:
• Deception in Movement: The top player should use body feints, sharp changes of pace, and unpredictable timing to disguise which cone they intend to tap.
• Sharp Reactions: The bottom player must stay light on their feet, maintain a low stance, and react instantly to the attacker’s movement cues.
• Explosive First Steps: Both players should focus on generating powerful first steps from a standing position to either escape or close the distance quickly.
• Game Awareness: Encourage players to scan for subtle body language cues and anticipate movements with composure and alertness.
Progression 1: Add a Fake Tap Rule
Allow the top player to perform one fake tap (hand feint without touching the cone) before committing to a real tap.
Focus: Improves deception and forces the defender to remain balanced and not overcommit to false movements or feints.
Progression 2: Introduce a Time Constraint
The defender must attempt to tag the attacker within 3 seconds of tapping the cone.
Focus: Adds urgency to the drill, helping both players sharpen their decision-making speed and increase reaction time under pressure.
