Instructions/Setup:

Play begins with a pass from a central player into one of two wide stations — left or right — alternating each repetition. After the initial pass, two attackers combine to create a 2v1 situation against a single recovering defender. The attackers are encouraged to use creative movements such as overlaps, underlaps, and quick one-two combinations to break down the defender and create a clear scoring opportunity.

Each station has a small goal or goalkeeper, so players must adapt based on the side of play and make quick decisions in tight spaces. The focus is on intelligent movement, timing, and variety in how the attackers combine to exploit the overload.

Coaching Notes:

• Variety of Combinations – Encourage players to experiment with overlaps, underlaps, and 1-2s to unbalance the defender and open up shooting opportunities.

• Timing of Movement – Emphasize precise timing of supporting runs to avoid being too early or too late, especially when linking up in wide areas.

• Communication – Attackers should use verbal or visual cues to coordinate movements and improve the flow of the combination.

• Defender Position Scanning – Players must scan quickly before receiving to assess the defender's positioning and select the best combination option.

Progression 1: Defender Starts Closer to the Play

Move the defender’s starting position closer to the combination area to reduce attacker time and force faster execution of overlaps or one-touch passes.

Focus:

Sharpens attacker decision-making under pressure and encourages quicker, more decisive passing combinations in tight spaces.

Progression 2: Add Recovery Defender From Central Area

Introduce a second defender who starts deeper and recovers toward goal as the 2v1 begins, adding urgency for attackers to combine and finish early.

Focus:

Promotes fast, purposeful attacking play and improves attackers' ability to recognize when to combine vs go direct with pressure increasing.
