Instructions/Setup:
In this unopposed finishing drill, play takes place on a vertically-aligned small-sided pitch roughly the size of two 18-yard boxes stacked together (36 yards long). Each team consists of two attackers, with one team active while the other rests.
The active pair begins behind the top goal, sprinting forward into the top box to finish from a wide cross. Immediately after the first finish, they transition down into the bottom box to complete a second finish from another wide cross—simulating quick attacking movements and repeated final-third actions.
After both finishes, the active team rotates out to rest while the next pair completes their two finishes, maintaining intensity and recovery balance throughout the drill.
Coaching Notes:
• First Movement Sharpness – Emphasize a game-like sprint to attack the top-box cross at speed, replicating in-game urgency and positioning.
• Adjusting Runs to Cross – Attackers should vary runs (front post, back post, late arrival) based on the cross type and deliverer’s position.
• Quick Transition Between Boxes – Players must switch mental and physical gears instantly to prepare for the second cross after the initial finish.
• Composure on Final Ball – Despite repeated efforts, attackers should stay calm in front of goal and focus on clean, accurate finishing techniques.
Progression 1: Add a Passive Defender in Second Box
Introduce a passive defender into the bottom box to create mild resistance, forcing attackers to adjust their timing and movement for the second finish.
Focus:
Improves scanning, timing, and adaptability under light pressure while still prioritizing technique.
Progression 2: Introduce a Timed Finish Requirement
Set a 5-second limit from entering the bottom box to completing the second finish, encouraging urgency and efficiency in transitioning between finishes.
Focus:
Increases game-realistic tempo, decision-making speed, and encourages quick recovery into optimal finishing positions.
