1/3 Pitch
Instructions/Setup:
Play begins with a 2v1 attacking scenario just outside the penalty area. The two attackers aim to combine and beat the single defender to score. Immediately after the initial attack is completed—regardless of outcome—the same two attackers remain active and reposition around the penalty area.
A second ball is then served from a wide area into the box, turning the exercise into a second-phase 2v1, where the same defender recovers and attempts to deal with the cross. This drill focuses on attacking transitions, movement, and decision-making across two distinct phases of play.
Coaching Notes:
• First Phase Decision-Making – Attackers should assess whether to combine quickly or isolate the 1v1 opportunity based on defender positioning and body shape.
• Supporting Angles – The second attacker must provide good depth or diagonal angles to receive a return pass or break the defensive line.
• Second Phase Reactions – Encourage attackers to stay alert and adjust their position immediately after the first action to prepare for the incoming cross.
• Cross Timing and Delivery – Wide players must deliver the second ball with accurate weight and timing to match attacking runs and create clear finishing chances.
Progression 1: Passive Wide Pressure on Crosser
Introduce a passive wide defender who applies light pressure to the wide player before the second cross, adding realism without disrupting delivery.
Focus:
Encourages quicker decision-making from wide areas, realistic delivery timing, and urgency in attacker positioning for the second ball.
