Instructions/Setup:
In this attacking drill, a winger receives the ball wide and must take on a defender in a 1v1 situation. The objective is for the winger to use skill, speed, and decision-making to beat the defender and score into a mini goal positioned near the end line. The defender applies pressure to challenge the attacker and prevent the goal.
Coaching Notes:
• Decision Making – Encourage the winger to quickly assess when to dribble past or use feints to creatively create space and open shooting angles.
• Body Position and Balance – Emphasize staying low and balanced to maintain control during rapid changes of direction and shield the ball effectively.
• Use of Pace – Teach the winger to vary speed effectively to unbalance the defender and exploit any hesitation or mistakes.
• Finishing Under Pressure – Focus on composure and accuracy when shooting in tight 1v1 scenarios to maximize scoring chances.
Progression 1: Timed Defender Pressure
Add a defender who starts 2-3 yards behind and begins chasing the winger after a short delay, increasing urgency and encouraging quicker attacking decisions.
Focus:
Improves reaction speed, decision-making under pressure, and ability to protect the ball while attacking.
